I would say the rain.We also had a pair of nesting owls in the area so I think this is why they didn't stay for a second nesting.About three weeks ago I had 10-12 of them visit. |

I lost 10 BB nestlings probably to an animal that got into the nest. I lost 18 eggs. Tree Swallows built over a couple of nests. I took down 6 boxes and put up new boxes with a slanted longer roof. Hopefully this well keep any animals out. |

The House Wren!!!! awful bird |
We had a blue bird trying to make a nest in the box--but house wren kept putting sticks in it also. Wren all ready had a nest a ways from the BB. Finally the BB gave up and moved away. |
How to get rid of house wrens. We finally took down all the wren houses that were on the trees. We heard them in the neibors yard-singing like mad. We have some trouble with house sparrows too. |

I had an ant problem and received excellent advice from the cornell website. All turned out fine.
Also I recently had a mouse nest in one of the houses. |
The nest was never fully finished during the second nesting. It was only 1/2 the size of a normal nest. There were 5 eggs laid but only 3 fertilized.

The cold wet weather that we all had in June and July. |
I had a chickadee nest in late May. When the tree swallows arrived they took over the chickadee nest even though I had another (paired) nest box next to it. The chickadees went to the empty box and renested. Then the bluebirds arrived and took over tha |

One of the nestings was disrupted by a sparrow. During on of my monitoring visits there was a horrifying stench I noticed as I approached the box. I opened the box and started to clean out the nest and mangled young, when I found to my surprise and deli |

Eggs that weren't viable. I had a series of nestings that didn't hatch. I am not sure why, it may have had something to do with the rain early in the season. |

One word, sparrows. I removed 43 sparrow eggs or young. They killed 4 bluebirds, 8 bluebird eggs disappeared and they killed 4 swallows. A second problem was all the rain early in the season. |
|
Regarding question 7, if you view paired boxes as a single nesting site, the utilization of "nesting sites" is higher. However if you view each box as a nest site the utilization is lower. In other words, box utilization would be higher by BB's if each |

Youth vandalism of nestboxes. As a result of the vandalism, I replaced the nail closures with star-head screws. |
This is the first year that I have placed a sparrow spooker on all my bluebird boxes after the first bluebird egg was laid and removed the spookers right after fledging. No eggs or chicks were lost to House Sparrow predation. |

Sparrows broke all 6 eggs in the first clutch. I trap and dispense year around but you cant get them all. This prevented my Bluebird pair from having 3 broods due to lost time. |
No Wrens this year. They usually make trouble for the Bluebirds then end up taking my second box. Nice not having them causing trouble for a change! |

I had some broken eggs with the eggs taken out of the boxes, broken with just a small hole and left outside the boxes on the ground. I had much competition from the swallows this year at our box at home. I found the BB's nested later and I only had one |

Losses of first brood birds due to the cold and wet weather this spring. |
Ron Howe and I monitored nest boxes together one fine day this spring at the Barracks Golf Course in Plattsburgh.
Later that day we were joined by David Vivian, the course owner. We put a young bluebird in David's hands and took a good close up photo. I |

Actually the 36 Bb fledged came from 8 of the boxes and this is the mosat we have had fledge to date (over 9 years).
The timing of bad weather (cold and rain) came near the end of the first nesting allowing success but caused the second nesting to be del |
Bluebirds which had a successful fledging delayed their 2nd nesting by 2 weeks or so due to rain and cold weather.
We usually have 2 nestings but only 2 pair did so this year |
